Punctoplasty

What is a punctoplasty?

The punctum is a small opening in the eyelid that allows tears to drain into the tear ducts and nose. A punctoplasty is a minor surgical procedure to treat a blockage of the tear duct by widening the punctum, reducing symptoms of excessive tearing.

SURGICAL MANAGEMENT

Punctoplasty

A punctoplasty widens the opening to the tear duct to reduce symptoms of excessive tearing.

1. Before your operation

At your pre-operative visit Dr Botha will conduct a thorough evaluation of your eyes and tear ducts and medical history to determine the most appropriate approach in your situation.

2. Surgery

The surgery is typically performed under local anaesthesia in the office.

The surgery involves making a small incision to widen the punctum.

During the procedure the tear ducts will usually also be irrigated (or “flushed”). This will allow the surgeon to determine whether the rest of the tear duct system is patent. If there is a blockage further down you may require a further procedure, please see “DCR surgery”

3. What to expect after your operation

You can expect some swelling and bruising around your eye following the surgery.

Antibiotic eye drops or ointment may be prescribed in the post-operative period.

Complications

A punctoplasty operation is a minor, very safe surgical procedure. Risks and complications are relatively few, but include:

1. Persistent watering

Post-operative eye watering is common and may continue for several weeks as the inflammation and swelling decrease.

2. Bleeding and bruising

Temporary bruising may occur.

3. Infection

Although rare, infection can occur and may require additional treatment.

The most serious risk of any eyelid surgery performed is damage to your eyesight. Fortunately this risk is extremely rare.

Conclusion

Punctoplasty is a safe and effective surgical procedure used to improve tear drainage. Dr Botha will tailor the surgical approach to your specific needs, considering your overall health and individual circumstances.
