DR VERONA BOTHA

MBChB, PG Dipl Ophth BS, FRANZCO, ANZSOPS

Dr Verona Botha is a specialist ophthalmologist with expertise in oculoplastic, orbital and lacrimal surgery, alongside cataract surgery and general ophthalmology. She works in both private practice and the public health system, with a specialist appointment at Waikato Hospital.

Originally trained in South Africa, Verona completed her medical degree at the University of Pretoria before relocating to New Zealand, where she undertook specialist ophthalmology training through the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO), in multiple centres around the country. She subsequently completed advanced international fellowship training at the West of England Eye Unit in Exeter and the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, gaining extensive experience in complex eyelid, lacrimal and orbital surgery.

Verona is passionate about providing thoughtful, individualised care and achieving the best possible functional and aesthetic outcomes for her patients. She has a particular interest in eyelid surgery, including functional and cosmetic blepharoplasty and ptosis surgery, as well as tear duct disorders, orbital disease and periocular cancer, trauma and reconstruction.

Education and training are an important part of Verona’s career. She is the co-Director of Training for RANZCO and is passionate about teaching, mentoring and supporting the next generation of ophthalmologists. She also serves on the Executive Committee of the New Zealand Branch of RANZCO and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons (ANZSOPS). She chaired the organising committee for the RANZCO New Zealand Annual Scientific Meeting in both 2025 and 2026 and regularly contributes to professional education, research and scientific meetings.

Verona is also committed to using her skills beyond her day-to-day practice. Through her volunteer work with Sight For All, she has participated as a Visiting Visionary, providing specialist ophthalmic teaching and training in Southeast Asia and helping to build local capacity in eye care.

Outside ophthalmology, Verona is an enthusiastic traveller and wildlife photographer. When she isn’t at work, she can often be found exploring somewhere new—usually with a camera in hand and wildlife not too far away.
