Entropion
What is entropion?
Entropion is a condition where the lower eyelid turns inward, with the eyelashes scratching against the eye. This can cause irritation, tearing, redness, and sensitivity to light. Entropion can affect one or both eyes and is typically associated with aging or scarring.
Entropion Repair Surgery
SURGICAL MANAGEMENT
Entropion repair surgery is a procedure to correct the inward turning of the lower eyelid, restoring its natural position against the eye. The surgery aims to alleviate discomfort, improve eye comfort, and prevent further complications.
1. Pre-operative Evaluation:
At your pre-operative visit, Dr. Botha will conduct a thorough evaluation of your eyes and medical history to determine the most appropriate approach in your situation.
2. Surgery
The surgery is typically performed under local anaesthesia, with or without sedation, as a day case procedure.
During the surgery a small incision is made on the outer aspect of the eye socket. The eyelid is then repositioned and attached to the outer aspect of the eye socket.
An incision may be made along the lower lid and/or sutures may be placed along the lower lid to assist in turning out the lid to its natural position.
3. Post-operative Care
Some bruising and swelling around your eye is to be expected. This can be reduced with ice packs.
Use prescribed antibiotic ointment on the wounds.
Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for at least a week, and refrain from swimming for two weeks.
Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing.

Complications
While entropion repair surgery is generally safe and effective, like any surgical procedure, it carries some risks and potential complications, including:
1. Infection
Although rare, infection at the surgical site can occur and may require additional treatment.
2. Scarring
Some degree of scarring is normal after surgery, but excessive scarring can affect the eyelid's function and appearance.
3. Recurrence
In some cases, ectropion may recur and necessitate further treatment.
4. Bleeding
Bleeding during or after surgery is possible, but this is rare.
5. Eye Irritation
Temporary irritation or dryness may occur after surgery, but this usually resolves with proper post-operative care.
The most serious risk of any eyelid surgery performed is damage to your eyesight. Fortunately this risk is extremely rare.
