Ectropion
What is ectropion?
Ectropion is a condition where the lower eyelid turns outward, away from the eye. This can cause irritation, tearing, redness, and sensitivity to light. Ectropion can affect one or both eyes and is typically associated with aging or scarring.
Ectropion Repair Surgery
SURGICAL MANAGEMENT
Ectropion repair surgery is a procedure to correct the outward turning of the lower eyelid, restoring its natural position against the eye. The surgery aims to alleviate discomfort, improve watering, and prevent further complications.
1. Before your operation
At your pre-operative visit Dr Botha will conduct a thorough evaluation of your eyes and medical history to determine the most appropriate approach in your situation.
2. Surgery
The surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia, with or without some sedation. It is done as a day case which means you will be able to go home the same day.
The surgery itself involves making a small incision to the skin on the outer aspect of your eye socket. The incision is usually well hidden within your natural skin creases. The eyelid is repositioned and attached to the outer aspect of the eye socket.
At the same time a tightening procedure may be done on the inner corner of the eye to help return the lid in this area to its natural position.
During the operation your tear duct may also be flushed and/or enlarged if indicated.
In specific cases, a skin graft may be used to repair the lower eyelid.
3. What to expect after your operation
You can expect some swelling and bruising around your eye following the surgery. Using ice packs will help to reduce this.
You will be provided with a prescription for some antibiotic ointment to use on the wounds.
You should avoid any strenuous activity including lifting heavy objects for a least a week and avoid swimming for two weeks after surgery.
A follow up appointment/s will be scheduled to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing.

Complications
While ectropion repair surgery is generally very safe and effective, like any surgical procedure, it carries some risks and potential complications, including:
1. Infection
Although rare, infection at the surgical site can occur and may require additional treatment.
2. Scarring
Some degree of scarring is normal after surgery, but excessive scarring can affect the eyelid's function and appearance. This may require further surgery to correct.
3. Recurrence
In some cases, ectropion may recur and necessitate further treatment.
4. Bleeding
Bleeding during or after surgery is possible, but this is rare.
5. Eye Irritation
Temporary irritation or dryness may occur after surgery, but this usually resolves with proper post-operative care.
The most serious risk of any eyelid surgery performed is damage to your eyesight. Fortunately this risk is extremely rare.
